Waynewood Recreation Association
Super Sunday – May 2, 2010
1:00 – 3:00 PM

Dear WRA Members,

This year “Super Sunday” will be on Sunday, May 2, 2010, from 1:00pm until 3:00pm, at the pool. This is your opportunity to sign up for the many great activities the WRA has to offer! It is also the last day on which to pay your dues ($450) before a late fee ($50) is assessed.

Volunteers will be available to help you join the swim team or tennis team, or enroll in our summer camps and classes. We will be signing up volunteers to help at the Independence Day celebration, and to help with our Thursday Night Dinners. In our effort to be “green,” in this newsletter you’ll find basic information about summer activities, but registration forms and detailed information can be found and downloaded from our website www.waynewoodrec.org. If you are unable to download a form, you may pick one up at the pool on Super Sunday, or at our Membership Manager’s house, Kathleen Thompson 8606 Cushman Place.

You may have noticed (through the patches of snow!) that our new resurfaced tennis courts are ready to go! Please thank Jay Hyland, and his merry contractors, for his countless hours of work and talent throughout this labor intensive project. The courts are just beautiful!

Introducing our new entry system! This year you will be keying in your member number into a laptop upon entry. Your picture, and pictures of your family members and long term guests, will appear for the gate guard to admit you into the pool. We will have photographers at Super Sunday, as well as at the pool during the opening weeks, so come with combed hair!

If you are interested in working as a gate attendant or a lifeguard, please go to jobs.highsierrapools.com/2010/ for information. If you’d like to host a party on the grounds, or reserve a field for team use, please go to the website, click on reserve a field and complete the family request or reserve a field form, and email it to vicepresident@waynewoodrec.org. Approved requests will be posted on the website calendar to help everyone plan. The 2010 WRA Handbook will be available at Super Sunday and on the website.

We welcome your input and your service in making our pool and grounds a fun and safe place to be. We look forward to another great Waynewood Summer!

Swim Team

The Waynewood Dolphins are looking forward to another exciting season. If you have swimmers 18 and under who are interested in joining our swim team, please go to the website for registration information, and the schedule of events. Bring your completed forms to the pool on Super Sunday where swim team volunteers will be ready to register your children and gladly answer your questions. If you have additional, please feel free to contact parent representatives Laura Wainwright lbwainwright@yahoo.com or Elda Dona elda.dona@cox.net.

Tennis

Waynewood hosts several tennis teams for adults and children age 10 and up, and camps for children age 5 and up. Information about teams, camps, and registration forms may be found on the website tennis page. Please bring completed forms to Super Sunday.

WRA members and their guests may use the tennis courts for open play within the guidelines set forth in the WRA Tennis Policies and Procedures in the WRA Member Handbook. The Handbook will be available Super Sunday, and is also on the website. WRA tennis courts are locked when the pool is not open. Use of the courts when the pool is not open and during the off season requires a special key which may be obtained by contacting the tennis chairman, Jay Hyland 703-704-5285, or tennis@waynewoodrec.org. A $15 fee is required. Please pay by check made out to WRA.

Diving Lessons

This information was added after the letter was mailed out. The diving lesson registration form is now online so you can bring a completed form to Super Sunday. WRA will offer diving lessons to children ages 5 and up. All divers will learn how to approach the board, and how to execute front and back dives, and front and back flips and have fun along the way. Tim Fisher, the current Mount Vernon High School dive coach and owner and head coach of Alexandria Dive Club, will lead the program again this year. One-week sessions will begin the week of June 21 and be offered through the end of July. Classes will be offered Monday – Thursday at a cost of $35 per session. For more information or to register for classes after Super Sunday, please contact Katherine St. Claire at kgsc3@verizon.net or 703-799-9224.

Swim Lessons

Swim lessons will be offered again this year by High Sierra Pools, our management company. Information will be available in the pool house on opening day.

Aquafit

Don’t miss out on one of Waynewood’s best kept secrets! The Aquafit program will return again this year. It is great exercise and great fun! We are pleased to welcome back our wonderful instructor, Vicki Sheppard. Classes will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9:00am to 10:00am, and will run from June 28 through September 3. The cost is $50 for the season. Payment is due the first day of class. For 2010 information, please contact Ann Greenleese at 703-360-6695.

Masters Swim

Waynewood will host two Masters Swimming clubs again this summer—Alexandria Masters Swimming (AMS) and Fort Belvoir Swim Team (FBST). Workouts will be offered from 6-7am, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 8-9:30am, except during home swim meets. For more information, check out the pool page on the website, or contact AMS 703-960-4598 or for FBST 703-627-4726.

Basketball Camp

Our basketball camp is a fun way for children to get some exercise, learn basketball, and play with their friends. We hope to have a camp again this summer, and are looking for a new instructor to run the camp. If you are interested, or know someone who has basketball camp experience, email Jay Hyland tennis@waynewoodrec.org.

Sandbox Tots

This is a program for the little, potty trained, WRA members ages 3, 4, and 5. Each day will be filled with age appropriate crafts, games, stories, and music. They will be learning while having a lot of fun. If you are interested in coordinating this wonderful camp, please email Kay Allen specialevents@waynewoodrec.org.

Thursday Night Dinners

Thursday Night dinner at the pool is a tradition we have all come to live for! We have a few fabulous WRA volunteers, but we would love some help! Grab your friends, book club buddies, bunco pals, or just come yourself and be part of a Waynewood tradition! Dinner is already planned, food is already purchased. All you do is show up, flip burgers or hotdogs, take orders or make change! It’s easy, and it’s fun! Please contact Gina Boling gamboling@cox.net if you are interesting in volunteering for a night of fun and community service!

Independence Day

This is Waynewood’s most beloved event. On July 4th we host a parade, midway games, Founders brunch, and much, much more! We have many volunteers, but are in need of someone to coordinate the show! If interested, please contact Kay Allen specialevents@waynewoodrec.org.
