Most Masters Swimmers join for fitness. A few are looking for triathlon conditioning or for training to compete in local swim meets. Masters Swimmers enjoy the support of fellow swimmers in pursuit of their swimming goals and have the chance to benefit from the social aspects of with others who share a love of swimming.
The Masters Swimming program centers around one-hour workouts conducted by a swim coach. Workouts emphasize conditioning and improvement of swimming technique. Occasional clinics with video instruction and video recording analysis are part of the regular program. Swimmers also have the opportunity to socialize outside the pool at happy hours, picnics, or dinner.
In addition to workouts at WRA’s lap pool, both AMS and FBST offer other day and evening workouts at neighboring outdoor pools, beginning in June and running through Labor Day. AMS and FBST members can swim at any of the workouts sponsored by their club.
Masters Swimming is a wonderful way to resume swimming, to improve fitness, or to train for competition. WRA members can join AMS or FBST at any time. They need not wait until Super Sunday. Both clubs schedules and fees are posted on their web sites (Alexandria Masters and Fort Belvoir Swim Team). WRA members interested in joining Masters Swimming may also contact AMS [Ray Novitske (703-960-4598)] or FBST [Mark Murray (703-627-4726)].
